British Rail fell victim to privatization in the mid 1990's. The passenger and freight operations were sold off to various companies and the infrastructure (tracks, stations, signals, etc.) was handed over to a company called Railtrack plc. Following a series of fairly dramatic accidents, Railtrack was sold to a non-profit corporation named Network Rail.

What a bloody mess.
