Yesterday we saw the Northern Lights! We were in the
backyard watching. They were bright florescent green with
red and blue streaks through them. Then we went to Como Park
but they weren't so bright.

We're back from our Geek Cruise!
A two week vacation, with a Mediterranean cruise as the
centerpiece. We've added a Image
Gallery to the website so we can share the snapshots.

We spent the weekend up north on the Iron Range. The leaves were
just starting to turn color, and the weather was brisk but not
cold. We went to Ironworld Discovery Center,
and also visited the Soudan
mine. We got an extra-special tour of the underground
physics lab.

I finished writing my book
at the end of April, following the Samba eXPo. The book is now
in production (which means countless hours spent arguing with the
copyeditor), and should be available in early
August.
In other news...
The mouse problem seems to have abated a bit with the coming
of spring. That's good news, though the cats seem quite bored
now.
Last year while all the work was being done on the house (and
the book) there wasn't much time to do basic upkeep on the yard,
which means we're spending a lot of time outside catching up.
It's nice to be outside, but there's a lot of work to be done.
Aled and Amalia are both doing the soccer thing. I don't
know about Rachel, but I'm completely useless as a soccer parent.
My car could fit inside most of the others in the parking
lot, and I can't tell a puck from a field goal.

Something's gone a bit whonky in the house. We don't typically
get wintertime mouse infestations but this year they're nesting
in the basement. The cats managed a record-high three mice in
one day today.

I found this on the web: Erwin
Hertel Violin, New York, 1951. This particular violin was
made by my grandfather ten years before I was born.
Perhaps--some day--if Amalia keeps playing...
